Zambia to possibly have a social media tax

Credit: Techjaja

In some rather disturbing news there is another tax about to be implemented on top of the taxes we already pay on other taxes.

*sigh*

At the 12th Cabinet Meeting held at State House with President Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu a tariff on internet phone calls was tabled. The reason given was:

“Government has noted an increase in the use of internet phone calls at the expense of traditional phone calls. This development threatens the telecommunications industry and jobs in companies such as Zamtel, Airtel and MTN.

Because of that, the Zambian Government has introduced a 30 Ngwee a day tariff on all internet phone calls.

A Statutory Instrument (SI) has even been created to help with the introduction of the tariff thay will be charged through mobile operators and ISPs.

Thos will immediately affect anyone in Zambia using apa like WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger and Viber to make calls.

  • This is very disturbing indeed, but is the Zambian government allowed to make money off services such as skype? When the owners have made it free?
