A Recap Of Last Week’s Technology Trends

Mondays can make you feel lost when you can’t remember what happened before the weekend so here goes:

Orica Solutions donated a computer lab worth $50000 to Twalubuka School in Kalulushi: to help students get familiar with computer technology and also help them in school research. The donation included a computer teacher as well. It was a welcome gesture in this digital age where books are hard to find and are not evenly distributed in schools but with a computer lab, the wealth of knowledge available will be immense, and hopefully the lab is maintained as time passes. Orica did this as part of its corporate social responsibilities (CSRs) in the areas it operates i.e Chambishi. Get the full details here.

Airtel Zambia gave away the 2nd car in its 1Bo promotion: to a lucky winner, Ian Chiwala,  who seemed very pleased with his new ride, obviously. Promotions are big for Airtel in its goal to give back to its customer base and it’s good to see no anomalies were reported… yet. We hope there are none anyway. Read all about this event here.

Samsung Zambia’s “Dream Big” competition winners returned home: from watching the AFCON finale in Equatorial Guinea. Welcomed back home by Samsung Business Leader James Chona, they were pretty psyched about the experience, with one winner Collen Banda saying, “As a football loving country, Zambians should experience the tournament at least once. I was part of group that was sent to Equatorial Guinea, we saw how football makes a meaningful connection with people from all walks of life.” Agreed. Zambians do love their football. MTN Donated K200000 to the 2015 Nc’wala ceremony: Half will go to the organizing committee and the other half for advertising purposes and other requirements. The cheque was presented by MTN Zambia Chief Sales and Distribution Officer Amon Jere who said, “Our passion and involvement over the past decade has been because we appreciate the importance of traditional ceremonies in cultural preservation. Zambia is endowed with a rich cultural heritage and there is need to preserve and profile this heritage for posterity and as part of the Zambian tourism package. MTN Zambia shall continue to support the Nc’wala and other ceremonies to the benefit of the country.” You can read more on that story here.

Microsoft made Word, Excel, PowerPoint apps compatible with the Windows 10 technical preview: which it is still developing and will release later this year but for now developers and technology-curious users can get the build by signing up for the Windows Insider Program and help the operating system develop. Microsoft also rolled out the Windows 10 technical preview to phones: Previously only running on laptops and PCs, the build can now also be accessed on mobile phones in the Lumia range, with the 630, 635, 636, 638, 730, 830 versions running the build perfectly, for now. You must be cautioned before installing the build that it is an incomplete piece of work and may have some bugs that may disrupt the normal operations of your phone. Lastly Google offered 2GB worth of space to every Gmail account holder who checked and completed their security checkup: This was Google’s way of trying to encourage users to protect themselves further from hackers or malware that Google could not do all by itself 0n its end.
