First launched globally in Zambia in partnership with Airtel, Facebook’s Internet.org app was then released in Tanzania under Tigo and in Kenya under Airtel, and now has made it to Colombia under Tigo as well to offer free basic access to the internet to their subscribers on those networks.

Internet.org was created by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg who said he wants the most distant parts of the world to also be connected to the internet, and Internet.org is doing just that.

Mark launched Internet.org app in Colombia yesterday alongside President Juan Manuel Santos for Tigo customers and the sites that users can have basic access to are:

It’s the first time Internet.org has gone Latin American and offered the service in Spanish. It is also the first time Internet.org is giving access to some government services for free.

In a blog post on its Newsroom site, Facebook said “We’ll continue to add additional services and bring the app to other parts of the world.”

However it is currently unavailable in Zambia due to ZICTA’s recent ban on freebie promotions from all mobile operators in the country.

With a 4.2 star rating in the Google Play store, we expect those stars to increase as Internet.org reaches more places and offers these services for free. They are a great way to enable subscribers stay informed, get educated and communicate with others.
