WhatsApp will end support for BlackBerry and Nokia
WhatsApp has announced that it will end support for the following operating systems (OS):
- BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10
- Nokia S40
- Nokia Symbian S60
- Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
- Windows Phone 7.1
It has given the reason that these OS platforms will not be able to ‘offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future’, it said in a blog. They have recommended that users upgrade to the latest iOS, Android and Windows operating systems by the end of the year.
The support termination is also a response to the fact that more phones being sold lately run on either Android, iOS or Windows and WhatsApp wants to focus on making its app better for those. These are the market shares for the major OS globally according to Forbes as of 2015:
WhatsApp just turned 7 years old and has been compatible with iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Android and Nokia platforms over the past years.
