Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Named Best Gadget At MWC 2015
The Mobile World Congress (MWC) is an annual event that is held to showcase the world’s largest mobile innovations, with Samsung ever present to unveil their latest phones. This time they released the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge, two phones that may be set to rival the likes of Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models.
Just yesterday, the Galaxy S6 Edge was named the ‘Best New Handset, Tablet or Device’ by GSMA in Barcelona, Spain where the MWC was held.
“With the Galaxy S6 edge, we sought to blend technology and design in a way the world has never seen before,” said JK Shin, president and head of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “We are honored that the GSMA agree that these are our most elegant and powerful devices so far.”
What features does it have?
- 5.1-inch curved panel with notifications functionality
- a 2560 x 1440 pixels screen resolution with Super AMOLED display
- it runs on octa-core Exynos processors, one being a quad-core 2.1GHz and the other 1.5GHz. It runs on a 14nm processor that will use power more efficiently on its 2600mAh battery.
- It has a 3GB RAM and will come in 16/64/128 GB variants
- It’s very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S5 with its fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor, and barometer.
- It has a 16MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera.
We have a few concerns about the S6 Edge smartphone however. With a dual edge screen, how hard it will it be not to accidentally tap on a command when the screen is unlocked? That’s already a problem with normal touch screens. What kind of cases will Samsung create for this? The phones also come with glass backs, which can break if dropped. The batteries are unremovable, so the microSD and SIM card slots will be on the sides of the phones (Apple much?).
In Zambia, we should expect the smartphones in April. We hope to do a hands-on review so we can see what capabilities the phone really has.
