Windows 10 shifts to ‘recommended’ update on your PC

Even if you don’t want it, it looks like your PC may update to the latest Windows 10 operating system if you have Windows 7 or 8.1. Support for the two will end soon, and now Microsoft has changed the Windows 10 update from an ‘optional’ one to a ‘recommended’ one on PCs.

Windows 10 now holds about 11.9% of the desktop OS market worldwide while Windows 7 still has a larger share at 52.5% of the mark, according to CNET.

If you have set your updates to automatically upgrade themselves, you may see Windows 10 installed, but you have an option to choose it as your OS. Go to your Control Panel and change your update settings to be able to choose whether to download and/or install them:

If you do choose it and don’t like it, you have 30 days to go back to your old OS. You can manage your Windows 10 upgrade by reading Microsoft’s support page here.

This is the second consumer adoption push to Windows 10 in less than a a month. Microsoft announced that all next generation PC will come preinstalled with Windows 10 and that support for Windows 7 and 8.1 will end in 2020 and 2023 respectively. Read about that here.
