Choppies Supermarkets joins ZamPay digital revolution

Zamtel Senior Manager for Mobile Money Dominic Bwalya shakes hands with Choppies Zambia Chief Financial Officer Mr. Mahesh Popat during the launch of the partnership.

Zamtel has announced the signing of a partnership with fast growing chain store Choppies for the use of ZamPay, a new mobile payment platform.

Choppies becomes the second major retail store to sign up on ZamPay after Spar following the launch of the payment platform last December.

ZamPay is Zambia’s first ever Quick Response (QR) codebased payment platform allowing consumers to scan the QR code displayed by the merchant with their phones to pay for their goods and services.

The partnership with Choppies underscores Zamtel’s commitment to the development of a cashless society and the enhancement of the mobile wallet experience for consumers across the country.

Zamtel Senior Manager for Mobile Money Dominic Bwalya signed the partnership with Choppies Superstores Zambia Chief Financial Officer Mr. Mahesh Popat at a media event at Choppies, Lake Road in Lusaka.

Mr Bwalya said the coming on board of Choppies will increase consumer choice and offer a world class retail experience which only ZamPay can provide.

He said the use of digital payment platforms such as ZamPay is critical to reducing the cost of doing business and eliminate cash handling risks.

Mr Bwalya further stated that embracing digital payment solutions like ZamPay will fast-track Government’s efforts towards achieving a cashless culture and economy.

“As Zamtel, we are hugely excited to welcome Choppies on our ever growing list of Merchants on ZamPay. Through this, we are confident of transforming our customers’ lives as we drive the mobile wallet movement in Zambia,” Mr Bwalya said.

“We are further excited about the response that ZamPay has received on the market since its launch. The number of downloads and transactions keep going up in line with our expectations and having Choppies as a Merchant will accelerate the uptake,” he said.

And Choppies Zambia Chief Financial Officer Mr. Mahesh Popat commended Zamtel for the partnership saying it will significantly help drive traffic to its stores dotted across the country.

“Having a partner like Zamtel which has the innovation and ability to deploy such modern technologies gives us leverage to continue offering world class shopping experience for our customers,” Mr Popat said.

“With ZamPay, it means our customers will spend less time on our tills enabling our cashiers to serve more customers and also eliminate the need for cash handling which increases security and safety for our customers,” he said.

“Choppies Supermarkets Ltd always updates itself and invests in new technologies in an effort to serve our customers better. We at Choppies believe that our partnership with Zamtel in launching ZamPay will bring good shopping experience to all our customers as they will be able to make payment for their purchases without using physical cash. Choppies Lake Road is the first outlet to sign up on ZamPay. However, we will be signing up the rest of the Choppies outlets countrywide soon.” Mr. Popat said.

Choppies began its operations in Zambia in November 2015 November when its first store opened in Kanyama at Tafika Commercial Mall along Los Angeles Road and presently has 20 outlets with more planned to be opened this year.
