China Knocks Off Samsung Galaxy S5 with Goophone S5

No shocking surprise here. We all know that China is the kingdom of knock-offs. Except now we just gape in awe at how fast these phone imposters are operating. A Chinese company called Goophone has released an S5 of it own copying the Samsung Galaxy S5. The Goophone S5 is not much different from the Galaxy S5 except that its screen measures at 5.1 inches, whereas, the Goophone S5 has a 5 inches screen. The exterior is shaped like the S5, and it even comes in similar colors: black, white, gold and blue. The wallpapers are strikingly similar as well.

The specs are of a typical 3G phone which in most instances suits most people. Lack of LTE connectivity isn’t that big of a deal in Zambia yet. The hardware capabilities are standard for a flagship phone from about a year ago. Instead of a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, there’s an 2GHz octa-core MediaTek chip. The rear camera is 13 megapixels compared to the Galaxy S5’s 16. The software is Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), and storage is 32GB.

Goophone has become the notorious China-based maker of smartphone impostors. It offers Android-powered knockoffs at discount prices by stuffing them with cheap, off-the-shelf parts like MediaTek. This is the same company which knocked-off the iPhone 5 before it was even released! The Goophone website offers a lot of devices which are easily recognisable, although, not authentic brands. It appears that Apple and Samsung are their biggest target. This makes sense considering that when you think of a smartphone, Apple and Samsung are at the top of the list. Unfortunately, for interested buyers, the Goophone S5 was listed as out of stock last evening. The website is fully in Chinese but Google can take care of the translations should you wish to read the actual product descriptions.
