Celebrating International Women’s Day 2014: Inspiring Change
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is- Inspiring Change. International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrates women’s rights across the globe. Google put together a doodle which embodies the celebration of women across cultures and in different parts of the world, even featuring the different languages from all over. Even Dora the Explorer made an appearance speaking her native Spanish!
According to Ryan Germick, Google doodle’s team leader, “International Women’s Day is a really hard topic. How do you summarise what women represent in a graphic?” You can follow IWD on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google+, Flickr, Scribd, Klout and more. For access to breaking news just follow #womensday in order to contribute to IWD discussions and forums to share your views.
International Women’s Day is marked on March 8 every year. This year, Asikana Network is collaborating with Alchemy Women in Leadership for the screening of the Girl Rising movie at Fresh View Cinemas Manda Hill this afternoon at 14:00 hours. The plot summary is:
The movie tells the stories of nine girls from different parts of the world who face arranged marriages, child slavery, and other heartbreaking injustices. Despite these obstacles, the brave girls offer hope and inspiration. By getting an education, they’re able to break barriers and create change.
Furthermore, Asikana Network also had a tweetup held at Chicago’s, Manda Hill last evening from 18:00 – 19:00 hours to tweet about women who have been inspiring in their lives. You can still make a contribution even if you missed out by searching #WDZAM2014, #WD2014 or #wearegirlrising on Twitter.
In honour of the Day this year, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said that, “… equality for women is progress for all.” The UN website further stated that International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
