Airtel Zambia Launches 1st eSIM Service In Zambia
Airtel Zambia has today announced the launch of “eSIM”, a first in Zambia. “eSIM” is a digitally embedded SIM that enables customers to access services without using a physical SIM, a new technology that simplifies life.
Speaking at the launch this morning, Airtel Networks Zambia Managing Director, Mr. Manu Sood said: “Airtel will continue to stay ahead of the curve and will continue to invest for innovations that benefit customers on airtel network. Airtel is proud to be the 1st in Zambia to launch HD Calls last week and today, eSIM. ‘eSIM’ benefits the customer by simplifying their life. It is a digitally embedded SIM that enables customers with the same functionality without using a physical SIM”.
Adding: “We have invested in this technology to simplify lives. Because of the eSIM’s many benefits, our customers will now have no hassles of worrying if they lose or damage their sim. As a business we shall continue enabling digital transformation to deliver the full customer experience. This initiative also reduces carbon footprint and is in line with our sustainability agenda,”
Last week, Airtel also launched HD calls in Zambia, another first by Airtel, which is the new VoLTE technology. Customers now have two new services only on Airtel – eSIM and HD Calls.
Speaking at the launch, Zambia Information Communication and Technology Authority (ZICTA) DG, Mr. Choolwe Nalubamba, who spoke through Director Economic Regulation and Consumer Affairs, Mr. Bernard Banda said: “We were here last week to launch the HD Calls innovation and it pleases us to be here again to be launching another great innovation from airtel which is an encouraging stride in our industry. I am indeed pleased to be part of the momentous occasion to witness the launch of the first of its kind in Zambia – the eSIM. The introduction of this innovation is making us a par with the world.”
Adding: “As regulator of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the country, issues of technology innovation and ICT development are at the heart of ZICTA’S core mandate. We seek to ensure that the ICT sector continues to spur a digital revolution for the economic development of Zambia. Thanks to airtel for launching innovations and keeping us abreast with the changing technologies and helping our people experience the best.”
The eSIM service is now available only on the airtel network and customers who wish to switch their current physical SIM cards to eSIM will need to ensure they have a compatible device. The device compatibility can be checked by dialling *#06# and if you find EID then your device is compatible. The eSIM can be obtained from Airtel Shops across the country, starting with shops in Lusaka, Kitwe, Ndola, Kabwe, Livingstone and Chipata.
