Airtel Zambia Wins 1st Place in Telecoms at The Trade Fair

In the fight among the mobile operators to be the best, Airtel Zambia managed to outdo everyone and get 1st prize as Zambia’s leading Telecoms Company, honored for best service in the category of Best Public Service and Utility Company Award in the ICT sector.

To present the award  to Airtel Zambia was Zambian Vice president Guy Scott, in the presence of Honourable Robert Sichinga (Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry) and His Worship Mr. Samuel Munthai (Ndola Mayor).

At the function held at Ndola Trade Fair Grounds, Yuyo Kambikambi, who is Airtel Zambia Head of Corporate Communications and Government Relations, said of her company, “We believe that communication is vital as business in Zambia continues to develop and change. We are here to stay and will continue providing the best services and products that help make Zambia more connected”. 

 So what did they base the award on for Airtel Zambia to win it? 

The award takes into consideration factors such as:

• A company’s role in economic growth and development: In an article on Forbes, Gary Shapiro, who writes about innovation and entrepreneurship  said this of America, which still works for Zambia as well, ‘We need to promote economic growth through innovation.  Innovation and start-ups fuel our economic growth. They are the ultimate job creators who start with ingenious ideas, take risks and create value for the consumer. It is crucial that we pursue national policies that promote innovation to ensure that there will be enough prosperity to carry on into the next generation”.

• Its strategic management:  The art and science of formulating, implementing and evaluating cross-functional decisions that enable an organization to achieve its objectives. It is also defined as the process by which managers of the firm analyze the internal and external environments for the purpose of formulating strategies and allocating resources to develop a competitive advantage in an industry that allows for the successful achievement of organizational goals, according to Strategic Management Insight.
• How it runs its corporate governance: According to Investopedia ‘corporate governance refers to the system of rules, practices and processes by which a company is directed and controlled. Corporate governance essentially involves balancing the interests of the many stakeholders in a company – these include its shareholders, management, customers, suppliers, financiers, government and the community. Since corporate governance also provides the framework for attaining a company’s objectives, it encompasses practically every sphere of management, from action plans and internal controls to performance measurement and corporate disclosure.

Airtel  Zambia must have been the best contender if all these factors checked out. They are not yet where I would personally like them to be as a consumer when it comes to service delivery but from a business point of view they do try to show some innovation, even though it isn’t always rolled out right.
