Facebook’s app Slingshot was an Accidental Rollout

Nothing worse than rolling out an app accidentally. Like really? Who does that? Apparently Facebook did, and it’s probably because their developers set a launch date on which the app automatically rolled out itself. This new app is called Slingshot and it really  took a shot at Snapchat, seeing as they have really similar features.

The Slingshot app was available in app stores for users in India, Russia,  Australia, and New Zealand, but Facebook has admitted that the roll-out yesterday was a mistake, and here’s what a Facebook spokesman had to say, according to Inside Facebook:

“Earlier today, we accidentally released a version of Slingshot, a new app we’re working on. With Slingshot, you’ll be able to share everyday moments with lots of people at once. It’ll be ready soon and we’re excited for you to try it out.”

How does Slingshot work? You can take a picture or video, send it to your friend but for them to see what you’ve sent, they have to send back,or ‘sling’,  something as well, hence the name Slingshot. It is similar to Snapchat in that the messages disappear after they’ve been viewed. Could this be a retaliation as Snapchat had turned down a $3 billion offer for the app from Facebook? Who knows! For now all we know is this Snapchat lookalike will roll-out eventually.

The date for its launch hasn’t been set yet but hopefully it will also be on the Android platform too, not just iOS as planned.
